Texas Electric Choice

POWER TO CHOOSE

On January 1, 2002, the Texas state Legislature enacted a bill to deregulate the electricity industry and open it up to competition. The result, Texas electric choice, is the power given to Texans to choose their own retail electric provider. The deregulation of Texas electricity now offers 75% of Texans the ability to shop and compare providers in their area to find the best deals and service.

Areas in Texas that have choice are:

  • Oncor covers Arlington, Dallas, Fort Worth, Irving, Midland, Odessa, Plano, Richardson, Round Rock, Tyler and Waco.
  • Centerpoint covers Baytown, Galveston, Houston, Humble, Kingwood, Pasadena and Sugar Land.
  • AEP Central covers Brownsville, Corpus Christi, Harlingen, Laredo, McAllen, San Benito and Victoria.
  • AEP North covers Abilene, Alpine, San Angelo and Vernon.
  • Texas/New Mexico covers Lewisville and various cities throughout Texas.
